Beastie Boys movie

So the greatest white rappers of all time, the Beastie Boys, are going to have a short film made about them! It will star Seth Rogen, Elijah Wood and Danny McBride. Adam Yauch - my favourite Beastie Boy who has recently battled cancer - has written and directed the movie which will premiere at Sundance Film Festival in Utah in January. It will be called Fight For Your Right Revisted and feature cameos from Susan Sarandon, Stanley Tucci, Orlando Bloom, Kirsten Dunst and Ted Danson. It will be RAD.

Cassi from Sunbury in Russh

portrait

This girl copped a lot of flak for her uncouth behaviour on a reality television modelling program in Australia two years ago, but she's managed to make it to 18, resist the industry's pressure to cap her crooked teeth and maintain her suburban self. I think she looks great.

Carey Mulligan in Vogue

I am certainly not a fan of her obsession with fur, nor her demands that people lose weight before they can grace the cover of American Vogue,  but I do think Anna Wintour has impeccable taste. Unquestionably, the
woman knows how to dress, and how to sell a particular look too. I love that she has selected Carey Mulligan, star of An Education, for the October cover, and that the wonderful Grace Coddington has styled her in a sweet, embellished Chanel dress adorned with paper carnations. "Grace sees in Mulligan what we all see: an astonishing talent as unerring and faultless and original in her fashion tastes as she is in her choice of movie roles," writes Wintour in her editor's letter. "After a long period of feeling that we were seeing the same, same girls again and again, her presence - here and in the culture at large - is very much welcome."  The fact that Wintour has thrown her support behind the young actress means further success is inevitable for Mulligan. Wintour is extraordinarily influential, and I think it is wonderful that she has decided to support an elegant, chic young actress rather than a tanned, bosomy IT girl who's always in a bikini.

Cat's eyes

I've just discovered liquid eyeliner. I don't know why I hadn't found it earlier. The only thing I can attribute it to is the wonderful allure of New York's department stores, which buzz with an intensity David Jones could only dream of. I'm mostly wearing it in a subtle fashion, but can't wait for a night to break out the big, dramatic Diana Ross cat's eyes. Wasn't she foxy in the sixties?

Bat For Lashes - Daniel

I love this song, but think this video is a little bit Rock Eisteddford. What's with the freaky balls on their heads? I don't get it, but Natasha Khan's voice is incredible and the lyrics about love are terribly sweet.

White works

I have always loved white shirts, blouses, dresses and jackets, although I've never ventured into the treacherous territory of white jeans or trousers. High waisted, wide-legged white trousers looked supremely elegant on Katharine Hepburn, but most women are not Katharine Hepburn. I'm also a fan of minimalist dressing, which Stella McCartney has just shown quite a lot of in her very chic collection at Paris Fashion Week.

The Big O and Obama

I will be in Sydney on October 26, but if I was in the states, I'd be heading to Long Beach Convention Centre in California to see Michelle Obama speak at the annual Women's Conference organised by Californian First Lady Maria Shriver, wife of Arnie. Other speakers that day include everyone's favourite new-age guru Deepak Chopra and Oprah Winfrey. www.womensconference.org

Zac Freeman's art

I have just discovered the work of Zac Freeman, an American artist who uses junk to make impressive portraits. This is what he says on his website - "I started making assemblage artworks of this type in 1999. The artworks are made entirely out of collected junk, found objects, and general trash. I glue the bits of junk to a wooden substrate to form an image, usually faces, which only can be seen at a distance. I was interested in communicating through visual representation in apparent 2-dimensional space and through the actual objects used for the medium in 3-dimensional space. It is very important to me that I incorporate the actual objects into the art as opposed to a picture or rendition of it because it better expresses the intention of the artwork. I feel the junk is more powerful being present. It is an actual thing to be reckoned with that existed in this time and place and carries energy in and of itself."

Dancing In The Dark

Today was a glorious, sunny fall day in New York. I spent the day with a wonderful friend traipsing around the city. Now to top off a lovely day, a little dose of The Boss, with one of my all-time favourite songs. I reckon Springsteen is on par with Jagger when it comes to moves. Sunshine and one of the world's sexiest men - what more could a girl want on her weekend?

Micky Malthouse

Today is probably the most appropriate day to divulge my secret crush on Mick Malthouse, coach of the Collingwood AFL team, premiers of 2010. I'm not really into sports at all, but I reckon Malthouse is a bit of a silver fox!

Capturing the essence of someone

I'm currently writing about Melbourne artist Vincent Fantauzzo, who is also working in New York right now. I keep getting distracted from my words by staring at his paintings. I think this 2009 portrait of the actor Brandon Walters is astonishingly good.

Chocolate for breakfast

This is my new favourite chocolate bar, the Reese's Fast Break. Wikipedia has just taught me that it was actually intended to replace breakfast, as you do. Here's the Wiki entry - Reese's Fast Break (or, in Canada, Hershey Sidekick) is a candy bar similar to the Reese's Peanut Butter Cup. It is coated with milk chocolate, and filled with peanut butter and soft nougat. While the bar initially had a blue and orange wrapper, the color scheme has since been inverted. Later formulations of Fast Break have a stronger peanut butter taste. This candy bar was intended to replace breakfast, hence the name "Fast Break", as in fast breakfast.

Glasser "Apply"

She's on the front cover of Fader right now, therefore destined to become big. I saw Glasser at the Williamsburg waterfront one Sunday afternoon in July and loved her voice and her dance moves.

Oh L'Wren, what were you thinking?

I realise that if your boyfriend is Mick Jagger, you can do whatever you damn well like in this world and pretty much get away with it, but what the hell was L'Wren Scott thinking when she designed these $2,725 boots? INSANE. How they hell is anyone going to get those on? Only a seasoned stripper would even know where to start...

Biutiful trailer

This movie is directed by the brilliant Alejandro González Iñárritu (Babel, 21 Grams, Amores Perros), it stars mega fox Jarvier Bardem, and the photos used in it were taken by talented Australian photographer Fergus Stothart who lives in Spain. What more do you need?

Puppy love

I'm interviewing Katherine Heigl tomorrow. Today she is in the media because she has just donated $1 million to help get animals spayed and neutered in Los Angeles, a very noble cause. Heigl is a big dog lover and earlier this year she was awarded the ASPCA's Presidential Service Award for her work in animal rights. I also love dogs and cats and feel like crying every time I read figures on the numbers who are euthanized each year simply because no-one wanted them any more. Good on her for using her Hollywood profile to promote the rights of animals.

Time for cuteness

I'm not really into modern pop music, with the exception of Beyonce and Jay-Z and some of Lady Gaga's songs like Bad Romance. Oh and I also have a secret soft spot for the Sugarbabes, who I was introduced to by a dear friend and former housemate who is an absolute pop fiend, but most of their songs are almost a decade old now so I guess they're probably not on high rotation on commercial radio much these days.  Anyway, I hear this song being played absolutely everywhere in New York, and I know it's big in other countries too. Despite the fact it is an ultra-commercial-catchy-pop-sensation, I like this song and the cute film clip too. I also don't mind the cute boy in the red cardigan - I've already professed my love of cardigans publicly once before.

Bob Dylan's art

This is one of Bob Dylan's paintings from his new series about Brazil. If anyone is in Denmark between now and January 2011, you can view his art work at Statens Museum for Kunst. What a multi talented man he is!

Boys on film

Last night I was in a classic American dive bar on First Avenue and they were playing really great music, including Heart's Magic Man and Fleetwood Mac's Dreams and Carly Simon's You're So Vain. I would have ordered a Pabst Blue Ribbon but this bar wasn't quite divey enough. Whenever I hear this song, I think of Sofia Coppola's The Virgin Suicides and this clever montage of Trip Fontaine. I haven't seen Josh Hartnett in a film for a while but I know he's hanging around downtown Manhattan because about four people have mentioned him to me in the last month. Regardless of wherever his career has taken him subsequently, I think he was wonderful in this film, and I think Coppola did a great job of fetishising a male actor for the delight of female viewers, something not seen too often in Hollywood films. I was discussing this recently with a group of clever creative gals and we couldn't think of another example where a male character is depicted on screen quite clearly through a female gaze, apart from Brad Pitt in Thelma & Louise and most recently, Robert Pattinson in Twilight. I attribute the enormous popularity of the Twilight films in no small part to this overt female gaze and the way Pattinson (and the werewolf) are offered up as fetish objects for viewers in a way Kristen Stewart is not.

Couples

I think Harmony Korine and Chloe Sevigny looked like the perfect couple, except of course for the fact that he loved drugs more than he loved her and she grew tired of his antics. Imagine if he'd been able to sort himself out earlier and they'd stayed together and got married and had babies. I reckon those kids would probably look a little something like this -
This is America's most stylish eight-year-old, according to GQ magazine, Arlo Weiner, son of Mad Men creator Matt Weiner. He makes me want to have children so I can dress them in adorable red velvet blazers and corduroy trousers. Then there are some couples who should never have created children -

Wine has never looked more glam

"A good photograph is one that communicates a fact, touches the heart and leaves the viewer a changed person for having seen it. It is, in a word, effective." Irving Penn

Halloween or haute couture?

I'm a big fan of patterned stockings in winter. I just bought these at Century 21 for $11 (god bless Americans and their love of discount designer wares) but I'm not sure if they're a bit too Halloween. Thoughts?

I love Michelle Obama

I've been discussing Michelle Obama over the last few days with some very intelligent lady friends. She has been getting a hard time in the press over comments she allegedly made to France's First Lady Carla Bruni about her life in the White House being "hell." A new book about Bruni written by two journalists, Michael Darmon and Yves Derai, claims that when Bruni asked Michelle Obama about her position as the US president’s wife, she replied, "Don’t ask! It’s hell. I can’t stand it." Both the White House and Bruni's people have strenuously denied the book's claim, but this hasn't stopped the press here from publishing the quotes as though they are fact. I don't believe a woman as savvy as Michelle Obama would actually have uttered such words to Carla Bruni, but I don't doubt for a second that this is how she really feels. I think her life would, often, be quite hellish. The woman didn't go to Princeton and Harvard to redecorate. As a friend sagely said, "Michelle Obama never wanted to be First Lady; she had a career and now she's gardening. She's no Laura Bush." Her initial reservations about her husband's run for the House of Representatives in 2000, based primarily on the impact the move could have on their children's lives, were well documented. Imagine having to deal with death-threats made against your family and having your children's every move tailed by the CIA for their own protection?  She has sacrificed her own career for the sake of her husband's, no small ask for a highly accomplished woman. When will we see more men forgo their own professional ambitions to raise children and support their high flying wives? I don't know many guys willing to entertain the idea, and while pay equity is still an issue, I guess it isn't a viable option for many women.

They really do rule the world

I forgot about Empire of the Sun when I wrote my ode to Melbourne bands who are big in NYC. I was a big fan of Pnau in the 'Sambanova' days when I first started uni and everyone in Melbourne was nuts for electronica and we all wore Royal Elastics and Mooks was our boutique du jour. Then when I graduated and moved to Western Australia, I listened to a lot of The Sleepy Jackson (and Little Birdy) and loved the prodigiously talented Steele siblings, Katy and Luke. Now I'm in NYC and every second Hummer that cruises down the Bowery is blasting Empire of the Sun, that psychedelic combination of Luke Steele from The Sleepy Jackson and Nick Littlemore from Pnau. I used to think Steele was becoming Australia's very own Roy Orbison, with his incredible voice and penchant for black suits and dark glasses, but now he's more like a chubby David Bowie in the Ziggy Stardust era. These guys are responsible for decent dance music being played on commercial radio, and they make rad clips.

Bless his little white heart

I'm not claiming that he possesses the artistic genius of Franco, nor any great intellect or sparkling wit. All I'm saying is that he's one god damn good looking young man. http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/entertainment/robert-pattinson-embarrassed-by-nude-scenes-20091118-imfe.html?from=smh_ft

God bless America

I love American candy, especially Reese's peanut butter cups. Here is a recipe I saw on a food blog for mini-brownie bites with Reese's mini-peanut butter cups inside. I haven't had a chance to make these yet but they sound delicious!

INGREDIENTS
3/4 cup butter, melted
3/4 cup white sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 eggs
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
40 mini Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, unwrapped from the brown paper

DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 180 degrees C.  Spray mini cupcake pan with non stick spray.  In a medium bowl, mix melted butter, sugars and vanilla.  Beat in eggs one at a time. Gradually add flour, cocoa, and salt and mix until combined.  Fill each cupcake slot slightly more than halfway but not more than 2/3 full.  Place a peanut butter cup in each slot pressing it down until it is almost level with the batter.  Bake in preheated oven for 15-18 minutes or until done.  Allow the brownie bites to cool for 5 minutes before removing from the cupcake tin.
*Notes: Be sure to remove brownie bites 5 minutes after coming out of the oven.  Otherwise they might cool and stick to the sides making it difficult to get out.  If baking these in a pan, your baking time will increase to 25-30 minutes.  You can be sure they are close to being done when you can smell them from your oven.

I love cardigans

Oscar de la Renta at NYFW 2010 shows cardigans can be chic and glamorous.

NYC neighbours

Well last night I finally saw my pugnacious neighbours in the flesh. They were walking upstairs as I was descending, and Frank Booth the maniac himself courteously stopped to let me through. He looks more like Neil Young than Dennis Hopper, but still crazy as hell. Before I actually saw them, I could hear him ranting, "So I told him, 'I love my wife.' You know I love you baby but sometimes you make me mad," to which she was replying, "Yeah....yeah....yeah, I know, I know..." She was wearing a very strange wig - there are a lot of women in this city wearing ill-fitting wigs, but they also dress in a manner which reveals they are adherents of a rather old-fashioned faith. Mrs Booth looked more scarecrow than Satmar. She's certainly seen a few Marlboro Reds in her time, or spent her youth baking on the beach. Once I was a few flights of stairs below them, I heard him say, "Damn that's a nice smelling perfume that lady is wearing." "Yeah, it is," she agreed. Coco by Chanel. Even deranged psychopaths can have good taste.

Fabulous NY ladies

Suzanne Golden, Patricia Fox, Lynn Yaeger, Iris Apfel and Tziporah Salamon. Lynn Yaeger wrote an article for the Times' T Magazine recently about the 'nutty-dressers' luncheon she organised with some of New York's most eccentric ladies. I love the way these ladies have styled themselves. I think they show that true style is not about shoppping at 'fashionable' stores and buying what everyone else is wearing, it's about finding something unique and making it your own. I saw Lynn Yaeger in Barneys in April and she looked incredible. She was buying Lanvin sneakers and speaking in her high pitched, Minnie Mouse-esque way.

Rachel Menken

Today I saw a girl in Manhattan who looked just like Rachel Menken from Mad Men. She had her hair styled the same way, and wore a little wool pill-box hat and a very 1950s navy blue skirt suit. She was buying lingerie in a department store, and she looked otherworldly. I love people who style themselves as though they're living in the early 60s.

Facebook: Unfriend Coal

Victoria's Secret sucks

So today I went into a Victoria's Secret store for the first time because I was curious why this brand is loved by American women. I'm none the wiser. Their stuff is awful; cheap nylon, lurid colours, tacky adornments, hideous smelling perfumes and rows of nasty lip glosses most likely made from bad chemicals. I tried on a pair of basic bikini bottoms because they were cheap, only to find that unless I wanted to reveal a larger portion of my butt than remained covered, I needed a Large which of course they didn't have. I weigh less than 120 pounds! Not all women want to look like strippers on the sand. Victoria's Secret, you are ridiculous.

Do you think these girls realise how silly they look dressed as angels?

One thing's for certain...

....Joaquin Phoenix looked a lot hotter back in 1999

I'm Still Here

So I saw I'm Still Here last night, the Joaquin Phoenix 'mockumentary' directed by his brother-in-law Casey Affleck. Clearly, these two have spent a great deal of time staging this thing perfectly, including Joaquin's unforgettable Letterman appearance and his night of 'rapping' in Miami in 2009. At the time, I thought Joaquin, or 'JP' as he refers to himself in the film, was trying to be the next Harmony Korine, that enfant terrible responsible for what I believe are the two finest Letterman performances one could imagine (youtube them now if you haven't seen them). But it turns out Joaquin is no Harmony. He's also no rapper, and because the film is so outlandish, you also don't really believe Joaquin is truly an actor descending into a spiral of debauchery on film.

Joaquin can act, and I believe he does a damn fine job of playing a drug-addled, overweight obnoxious Hollywood prick. But if he is simply acting the part, you wonder what prompted him and Affleck to come up with such a shtick? Is this Joaquin impersonating Robert Downey Jnr? Or Britney Spears? Or Lindsay Lohan? But WHY?! My guess is that the guy wanted a vehicle to showcase his comedic talents, because the humour is the only thing that saves I'm Still Here from being oh so terribly boring. The film seems to drag on for an eternity, and many points are just too heavily laboured; we get that he is desperate to meet P Diddy, or 'Puffy' as he calls him, but do we really need to watch his assistants make a million inane calls to Puffy's assistants? A few scenes, where Joaquin salivates as he orders prostitutes online or vomits for an awfully long time, are absolutely cringe worthy (no actor who actually behaves like this would allow anyone to make a documentary about their vile behaviour, surely).

However, in other parts, I'm Still Here is extremely funny. The sight of one of his badgered 'assistants' retaliating to a barrage of insults by defecating on Joaquin's sleeping face is hilarious. A cameo from Ben Stiller is equally amusing, and so are the scenes with Puffy listening to JP's 'album.' Joaquin's performance in a Miami nightclub, where he raps 'I'm Still Here' and rhymes Joaquin with spleen, is also great.

Joaquin Phoenix will no doubt appear onscreen in a Hollywood film again soon enough, and there is sure to be the accompanying press heralding his 'return to form.' Joaquin has given the media what everyone loves to see - just another drug-addled star destroying themselves in a very public manner. With this much hype, Phoenix and Affleck will certainly make a profit from their comedic undertaking. I suspect Joaquin Phoenix has been 'here' all along.

....but I'm too tired to tell you about it right now

NYC neighbours

Well I've just discovered that my angry neighbour Frank Booth does have a lady friend - and they hate each other. This morning she screamed she hasn't had a drink in three months. Then I heard him screaming that she didn't give him enough money for this month's rent, before storming out of the house warning, "Don't you fucking touch any of my stuff!" Now someone is rocking out to You Can't Always Get What You Want. I guess it turns out that sometimes love isn't enough. We also need cash and good music in our lives. And sometimes, some of us really need a drink.

What's Macauley Culkin up to these days?

This is one of my favourite Sonic Youth songs, and the freaky video starring Macauley Culkin and his teen bride Rachel is pretty damn good too. He's 30 now, and dates Jackie from That 70s Show.  I wonder what he's up to.

Black & White @ Preen

A look from the Preen NYFW show modelled by Australian girl Abby-Lee Kershaw.  I've always been a big fan of black and white, as any one who knows me or anyone reading this blog can attest to! The Preen show also featured lots of white dresses, which will obviously be big next summer.

The wisdom of Hendrik Hertzberg

A debate is currently raging in this city about a proposed Muslim cultural centre in downtown Manhattan. On September 11, a friend and I went down to the World Trade Centre site to see the memorial service that is held each year. We missed the service, but saw the awful flocks of conspiracy theorists and anti-Islam groups who used the occasion to promote their particular brand of bigotry. It was incredibly distasteful. I think The New Yorker's Henrik Hertzberg had the right idea when he wrote this on the day -
"Fortuitously, there exists one location that would be ideal for the so-called “Ground Zero mosque.” That location would be . . . Ground Zero. The principal goals of the 9/11 attacks were to ignite a civilizational war between Islam and the West, especially America; to marginalize moderate Muslims and strengthen violent Islamists; to expose American religious tolerance and pluralism as a sham; and to recruit young Muslims to the most brutal, retrograde, reactionary form of jihad......It would be hard to imagine a more powerful, pointed, passionate rebuke to Al Qaeda’s brand of twisted Islamism than for an open-hearted cultural and religious institution representing the tolerant, democratic Muslims of New York to be part of the risen World Trade Center."

Porteno has opened in Sydney!

Sydneysiders! Go and check out Elvis and Ben's latest venture, a traditional Argentine grill, and imbibe some quality Argentine wines from Jed Wines. WWAGTD would like to give a very special shout out to the lovely vegetarian lady who accompanied Tom Egan from Jed Wines to the opening party last night and couldn't eat a damn thing. Porteno is a strictly carnivorous affair, but I recommend it based solely on the fact the boys are Passiona fiends. How can anyone not love a man who loves Passiona?

Michael Kirby on fish & chips and heartless complacency

In June 2007 I asked former Australian High Court Justice Michael Kirby some questions for a jovial profile piece for one of Richard Ackland's legal websites, The Justinian. His answers were very amusing, and for those of you who are not Justinian subscribers, here they are -

Describe yourself in three words: Focused - energetic - kind.
What are you currently reading?: Edmund White "My Lives" (2005) and Anna Politkovskaya A Russian Diary (2007).
What's your favour film? East of Eden (1954 - Elia Kazan).
Who or what do you fantasise about?: A dinner party with Janet Albrechtsen.
What stimulants do you recommend?: A subscription to Fox & Friends.
Describe your underwear: Belt and braces variety.
What is your greatest fear?: Retirement (coming up March 2009).
What words or phrases do you over-use?: "It follows", "Thus" and "Accordingly".
Who would you most like to meet?: Bishop John Shelby Spong.
Who do you envy and why?: The beautiful people, like Paris Hilton. Reason's obvious.
What regrets do you have?: Not enough fun when I was young.
What is your most disturbing personal obsession?: My unmatchable work ethic.
What's your most glamorous feature?: Still to be discovered.
If you were a foodstuff, what would you be?: Passionfruit.
What human quality do you must distrust?: Heartless complacency.
What would you change about Australia?: Bill of Rights, for starters.
Who or what do you consider overrated?: Food and expensive restaurants. Like Peter Costello, I prefer fish and chips on the beach.
What's the first thing you do in the morning?: Drink two full glasses of Sydney water.
How would you like to die?: Never think of it. Too much still to do.
What would your epitaph say?: "A loving man".

Everyone is getting married...

I know eight couples who are getting married at some point in the near future. If I wear this same Rachel Roy New York metallic one-shoulder dress ($1295 at Bergdorf Goodman) to all eight weddings, it becomes quite affordable, don't you think?

Adios Carlos

I saw Interpol at the Williamsburg Hall of Music on Friday. It was a surprise gig to celebrate the launch of their fourth album, released last week. It was also the first gig they have played in New York since announcing in July that Carlos Dengler was leaving the band after they had finished recording their album. Big shoes to fill for the new guy but they played really well. At the end of 'NYC', singer Paul Banks said that they had written that song just a couple of streets away on N 4th St. Apparently Carlos is now composing classical music as well as DJing.

Chic lady No.2

Rose Byrne in Gucci at the Emmys. She looks gorgeous, and the dress is sexy without being too revealing. Some actresses opted for really short dresses at the Emmys but I think you should always wear a full-length dress to a ball or awards ceremony. I also like her hair being swept off her face, and the fact her skin is natural as opposed to Cajun shrimp orange.  Very old Hollywood glamour.

NYC neighbours

I am currently living on East 5th Street in the East Village. I think Frank Booth from David Lynch's Blue Velvet is living next door because I can hear a crazed man repeatedly shouting, "I'm trying to sleep you fuckers!" and "I'll get you, you fuckers!" It's after 4pm in the afternoon, and I can't hear anyone else in the building making noise. This man has been waking me up at about 9am most mornings when he picks up his electric guitar to jam to the Rolling Stones or Led Zeppelin - at least I think it's Led Zeppelin, although I guess it could be Wolfmother. He gets really into it and I imagine he's downed  a few Pabst Blue Ribbons in his time. Our apartment is close to a police station and my flatmate said they often visit this man. He said he is contemplating complaining about the noise, "but I guess it's not illegal to shout abuse in your own apartment." And I used to think it was bad when I'd hear neighbours having sex in Sydney. Maybe my neighbour just needs a lady or man friend and then he wouldn't be so angry.

Lady Gaga & Terry Richardson = sick

This cover makes me sick, and it's not just because I don't eat meat. When is the fashion industry going to wake up and realise Terry Richardson is nothing but a filthy perve who degrades women? Jezebel seem to be the only ones with the courage to call bullshit on his work. Anyone can shoot porn.  It is not cool, it is obvious - obviously wrong.
